How do I pay my VAT

It is now a legal requirement for VAT registered businesses to file their VAT returns online and also pay their VAT electronically.  Payments can be made by Direct Debit, Bank Transfer or by debit or credit card (subject to a processing fee).

The easiest way to pay is by direct debit.  This will allow HMRC to withdraw the VAT due automatically from a bank account once set up. If you wish to set up this facility, you can do so using your online VAT account with HMRC.  Payment is automatically collected three working dates after the due date for the VAT return.

Many businesses pay their VAT by BACS or bank transfer.  To use this facility, you will need HMRC’s bank account details for VAT payments, which are:

Account Number: 11963155

Sort Code: 08-32-00

Account Name: HMRC VAT

Reference: (your VAT number)

If you wish to pay by debit or credit card, you can use the online BillPay system.  Credit card payments incur a surcharge of 1.4%.  However VAT penalties, interest or surcharges cannot be paid this way.  Payment can be made here:

When you make a payment to HMRC, you need to use your nine digit VAT number as the reference for payment.  This is in the format 123 4567 89.
